Women pursuing auto careers may be eligible for scholarships

With the addition of new technologies in the automotive industry, professionals who are trained in car repair are in demand. In order to support women who wish to enter a career in this field, the Global Automotive Aftermarket Symposium (GAAS) Scholarship Committee recently announced a partnership with the Car Care Council Women's Board to create an online scholarship resource, according to After Market News.

Through this initiative, women who plan on pursuing careers in the automotive market can find opportunities for tuition assistance. Next year, the Women's Board will award one high school scholarship worth $1,000 and three technician scholarships, which includes a $2,500 financial aid package plus a trip to the annual Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo in Las Vegas.

"We are pleased to be collaborating with GAAS in this educational opportunity that will not only enhance the Women's Board Scholarship Program, but will provide female students planning to pursue automotive aftermarket careers a one-stop resource for assistance with their education," Julie Becker-Myers, director of Automotive Systems Technology at Northwood University and chairwoman of the Women's Board scholarship committee, told the news source.

The GAAS Scholarship Committee recently announced that it will financially assist 86 students for the 2010-2011 academic year. It has awarded more than 1,500 scholarships over the last 15 years.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, professionals in the automotive industry earned between $14.90 and $20.07 per hour during the 2008 fiscal year.
