Western Governors University to offer 100 scholarships to math and science teachers

In an effort to help combat the shortage of primary and secondary school educators, Western Governors University, a provider of competency-based online degree programs, has announced the creation of a new scholarship designed to help as many as 100 mathematics and science teachers progress in their career path.

The WGU Mathematics and Science Educators Scholarship will be awarded to working teachers who are looking to further their career by earning an advanced graduate degree while continuing to remain employed. The scholarship will also be available to select aspiring educators who hope to enroll in an initial teaching certification program.

Beneficiaries will be awarded the $4,000 scholarship based on their academic record, capability of studying online and their current competency. Awardees will receive up to $800 per six-month semester, and can renew the scholarship for five terms.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the employment of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers is estimated to grow by 13 percent over the next decade, although hiring is expected to vary by region and concentration.
