Utah residents in online schools can win scholarships from First Wind
High school students in Utah who plan to pursue campus-based or online degrees after graduation may want to consider applying for scholarships, such as the one recently disbursed by First Wind.
The wind energy company has announced the winner of its First Wind Scholars award, which was given out for the first time this year.
Students in the state's Millard and Beaver counties were invited to apply for the $3,000 scholarship. The program was developed in October in recognition of the role a local teacher and his students played in the development of the company's 97-turbine wind project.
To be eligible for the awards, high school students were required to show a potential for success in college and have an interest in energy, science or the environment.
Qualified students had to submit standardized test scores, a high school transcript and a 300-word essay. The winner was selected based on academic performance, community service activity and the quality of their credentials.
Carol Grant, senior vice president of external affairs at First Wind, said the award was intended to recognize students in classroom-based or online schools who "show[ed] interest in and the capacity to contribute in the fields of environment, energy and science."
