U.S. government supports university's online program expansion

This past year, the U.S. Department of Education has granted millions of dollars to colleges and universities that are launching online programs. This is part of an initiative founded by President Obama, to give more Americans the opportunity for higher education. Many schools will be given funds for online teacher training, advanced communication technologies and information technology support.

For example, Heritage University in Washington State recently received a $2.4 million grant to expand online academic offerings, NBC News Station KNDO reports.

The grant will be used on the launch two new online masters degree programs in professional studies and learning. These offerings will be added to an online bachelors degree and online masters degree in English.

The web-based masters degree programs are designed to meet the needs of professional educators. These individuals often work full-time during the year, and may benefit the most from the flexibility of online learning. Students have anytime access coursework and they can create a unique schedule that works around their life.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that teachers who have advanced degrees and certifications may have more job prospects than bachelors degree holders with no further training. On average, these professionals earned more than $80,970 during the 2008-2009 academic year.
