U.S. government launches scholarship for STEM students

In order to help more adults obtain higher education, the government has implemented a number of financial aid programs. Many of these initiatives encourage degree seekers to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related fields, as a number of companies are seeking workers with this type of training.

Recently the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) announced the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program. This financial aid package will be awarded to students who are enrolled in STEM degree programs. The DOD expects to award 300 scholarships this year, which will be worth a total of $45 million.

SMART offers an opportunity for learners to receive a full scholarship and be employed at a DOD research facility upon graduating.

"The SMART Scholarship Program is one of the nation's most generous scholarship programs funded by the DOD to help support education and job placement for America's next generation of scientists and engineers," said Deborah Shifflett, SMART Program manager.

Scholarships include a cash award of between $25,000 and $41,000 per year, full tuition, health insurance and book allowance.
