University launches $55 million scholarship campaign

In order to improve access to education for more students, a growing number of schools are increasing their financial aid programs. These initiatives are designed to benefit those who are unable to afford the often high costs of continuing education.

Schools such as Webster University are taking great measures to boost their tuition assistance programs. The university recently announced a $55 million fund-raising endeavor, Webster Works, which will provide scholarships for current and future students who are attending the school.

"The financial support and academic preparation that positions our exceptional students for individual excellence and global citizenship requires a comparably exceptional commitment of this community in terms of our talent, time and resources," said Elizabeth J. Stroble, president of Webster University.

To date, the university has raised $45 million, and the campaign will end in December of next year.

A number of similar tuition assistance opportunities exist, as Sallie Mae - a provider of student loans - reports that more than $168 billion in financial aid was available during the 2008-2009 academic year.
