By simply jumping online, college students from across the country will be able to compete for $1,000 scholarships in the 2010 Avnet Tech Games.

The technology distributor will allow students to work alone or in teams in contests that require them to apply technological solutions to real-world problems.

The fall session of the year-long competition will offer three virtual games. The Android App Challenge will require students to use Google's Android and Open API technologies to create an android. Students will address a given scenario using Microsoft Windows 7 solution in the Microsoft Design the Best Windows 7 Computer contest. In the Video Tech Spot competition, students will develop a 15-second TV advertisement promoting the Avnet Tech Games 2010, which will be held April 10, 2010 in Tempe, Arizona.

Winners can use the $1,000 awards at any accredited college or university nationwide and will also gain "added experience that can help in landing that all-important first job," said Teri Radosevich, vice president of community relations for Avnet.

Pursuing an online program in information technology may allow students to participate in such competitions in order to gain marketable skills.
