Technology company offers financial aid to female students
In the recent months, government officials have increased their efforts to encourage college students to pursue higher education in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Now, one company is taking this effort a step further by offering financial assistance to women who are pursuing campus-based or online degrees in similar subjects.
Information technology firm Wipro Technologies recently announced a partnership with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) to offer scholarships to female students who are pursuing degrees in computer science or related fields at campus-based or online schools.
The program, which is an extension of a similar financial aid program offered by the ACM Council on Women In Computing (ACM-W), is intended to help female students further their education at research conferences across the globe. Through this initiative, organizers are aiming to encourage female students to enter this field, and help the ACM-W disburse larger financial aid packages.
Wendy Hall, ACM president, said that this program will allow the organization to "expand its efforts to attract the best minds to the computing field across the demographic spectrum - especially among underrepresented groups."
