Individuals who are planning to enroll in campus-based or online schools to study design may want to consider enrolling in competitions that award cash prizes, such as the one that was recently held by Discover Card.

The credit card company reached out to prospective graphic designers through its Facebook site by offering students the opportunity to create original artwork for its newest card. Using an application that was developed by the social media site, entrants were challenged to draw original designs on a graphic overlay that simulated a credit card. A total of 6,700 individuals entered the contest, and the top creations were determined by a public vote on the Facebook page.

The winning submission resembled a cassette tape and earned one student a $1,000 award. In addition, the design will be featured on the company's new credit card, which is due out this April.

Cash prizes of $500 and $250 were also disbursed to students who drew dollar bill- and space-themed designs. Honorable mention recipients were given $50 Discover gift cards.

Online courses could help graphic design students gain the technical skills they will need to stay abreast of emerging trends in their industry.
