Shipping organizations announce scholarship winners
For the 30th consecutive year, the International Longshoremens Association (ILA) and the New York Shipping Association have provided financial aid to college-bound students.
A total of eight degree seekers were selected for this years Teddy Gleason Scholarship program, which was created in honor of the former president of the ILA. The honorees were recognized at an awards luncheon in lower Manhattan this afternoon.
The program is intended to support dependents of former and current members of the ILA who reside in the Port of New York and New Jersey. Applicants to the 2010 program were required to have plans to attend an undergraduate, apprentice or training program at an accredited campus-based or online school.
This years winners were selected by the College Scholarship Service based on a variety of factors, including academic achievement and their scores on standardized tests. Each awardee will receive a $6,000 annual grant for up to four years of their undergraduate careers.
At present, the program is supporting a total of 32 college degree seekers, and disburses $192,000 in financial aid each year.
