Scholarship supports those with children in the military
According to Sallie Mae - a provider of student loans - more than $168 billion in financial aid was available during the 2008-2009 academic year. Much of this funding was provided my universities who sought to assist their students with tuition costs.
For example, Grantham University recently announced that it will offer one student a full-tuition scholarship. The initiative is the result of a partnership with MyBlueStarFlag.com.
Parents who have a child in the military often display a blue star flag in the windows of their homes. The Blue Star Flag organization was founded in their honor.
Last year's scholarship recipient, Donna Cheney, is working toward an associate's degree in multidisciplinary studies at the university. Her goal is to start an assistance group that will support service members and veterans as they transition to civilian life. Cheney and her husband have four sons, all of whom are serving in the U.S. military.
Recipients of the scholarship can use the funds to cover tuition costs, textbooks and fees.
