Publishing company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has announced this year's winner of its annual scholarship, which benefits California teachers who wish to pursue advanced degrees.

In collaboration with the California Association of Bilingual Education, the Boston-based publisher selected one educator to receive a $5,000 award, which will be used to cover the cost of tuition for a masters or PhD program in education. The award is intended to help beneficiaries become superintendents after they earn a degree.

In addition, the funding organizations aim to give masters degree candidates additional support as they "work to develop and improve education programs for English learners and bilingual students statewide," said John Sipe, vice president of the Western sales region for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Scholarship organizers have opened the application process for next year's award, which will be presented at the 2011 CABE Conference Luncheon. Applicants should be CABE members who are in good standing, be planning to pursue a higher degree in education in order to obtain an administrative position and have a demonstrable passion for teaching English language learners.
