Online university to offer scholarships to displaced workers
Western Governor's University, which offers online degree programs, has announced that it will offer its Economic Turnaround Scholarship Program for the second time.
The university has distributed $351,000 to unemployed workers to date. The second round of scholarships will benefit 150 students - an increase of 50 from the program's last offering - to address a high volume of applications.
The program will benefit students who have lost their jobs in the past year. To be eligible, students must be able to complete a bachelors or masters program in two years or less and already hold an associates or bachelors degree.
Winners will receive up to $1,250 per six-month term for up to four terms for a maximum of $5,000 per student. Scholarships are available for any of the university's four colleges in business, teaching, information technology and health professions.
Potential candidates must apply for the program before November 30, 2009. Winners will be chosen based on their academic record, demonstrated financial need, current competency and preparedness to enter an online course of study.
