Online university awards veteran with scholarship
Sallie Mae - a provider of student loans - reports that more than $168 billion in financial aid was available during the 2008-2009 academic year. Many nontraditional students received tuition assistance from universities and private organizations.
For example, Glen Davis, a father and military veteran, recently received a full-tuition Project Working Dad scholarship to Ashworth College. The institution is one of eight accredited online schools that is participating in the program, which has awarded more than 280 scholarships totaling close to $5 million.
Davis - who will use the financial aid to pursue an online associate's degree in business management - said that his goal is to obtain higher education in order to better serve as a role model for his family.
"After serving 10 years in the military and several more years in the corporate arena, I regret not taking the time to complete my degree," he said. "Finding myself unemployed, I now understand what a critical mistake it was to not make the sacrifice."
