Online university awards $1 million in scholarships

As distance learning becomes more popular, universities are funding scholarships for those enrolled in online programs. Many schools offer financial aid to incoming students who meet specific qualifications or individuals who are enrolling in certain majors.

For example, Rasmussen College recently announced the recipient of its 110th Anniversary Scholarship, Clarksville Online reports. The online school will be providing the winning individual with $10,000 to complete a bachelors degree in criminal justice.

In March, the college announced that it would be awarding 110 academic scholarships valued up to $1 million total in honor of their 110th anniversary.

"Rasmussen established the 110th Anniversary Scholarship to celebrate our history of higher education and to support students who have demonstrated a commitment to obtaining their degrees," Rasmussen College president Kristi Waite told the news source.

Many adult learners qualify for financial aid, scholarships and grants that may be put toward online higher education. A degree from a web-based institution could cost thousands of dollars less than tuition at a traditional campus-based school.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, many scholarships are based on a wide variety of criteria including financial need, academic merit and athletic ability.
