Online degree candidates can win scholarships through design contests
Students who are pursuing architecture or engineering degrees at online schools may be able to use their skills to win financial aid through design contests, such as the Student Titanium Pedestrian Bridge Design Competition.
The contest, which is sponsored by the Defense Metals Technology Center (DMTC), challenges competitors to design a pedestrian bridge that could solve logistical problems at the Quaker Square Inn in Akron, Ohio.
A total of five teams have already been named finalists and will present their designs to a panel of judges in April, when first place, second place and honorable mention winners will be announced. Scholarship money and educational grants will be given to members of all five groups.
DMTC officials will use the top design to seek government and private funding to construct a bridge in the area after the competition is over.
Charles Clark, executive director of the DMTC branch in North Canton, Ohio, said the finalists' submissions "demonstrate the depth of expertise of the outstanding design, architecture and engineering schools in our region."
Individuals who enroll in online courses may have enough time to focus their energy on similar projects without falling behind on their schoolwork.
