Residents of California who are planning to enroll in a campus-based or online degree program may soon have more financial aid options through two new scholarship opportunities.

Kaplan University, an online school, has announced the launch of the California Commitment and Experiential Learning Scholarships, which will be disbursed to California-based students over the next three years.

Individuals who are planning to enroll in the school's undergraduate or graduate degree programs may be eligible for California Commitment Scholarships, which are worth $5,000 each.

The Experiential Learning Scholarships, which are worth $1,500 each, are available to students who are accepted into the university's portfolio development course. In this class, degree candidates will learn how to document their college-level coursework as well as past professional, military or other learning experience.

University officials expect to award approximately $2.5 million through both programs, and legal residents of California are eligible to apply.

Greg Marino, president of the Kaplan University Group, said that the awards are intended to "provide greater access to higher education and to help California students fulfill their academic goals."
