Nonprofit organization awards scholarships to women
A growing number of government programs, private organizations and universities are aiming to increase their financial aid programs. Many of these institutions award tuition assistance packages to women, minorities and those who are from underrepresented demographic groups.
For instance, Core 4 Women - a nonprofit distance learning forum - recently awarded three of its members with $1,000 scholarships for online degrees. Core 4 Women is a social networking site that provides opportunities for people to improve their lives through online education.
One recipient of the scholarship, Rebecca Danielson - a human resources recruiter from Illinois - said that as a full-time working mother, she is very limited in her availability to take classes in a traditional classroom setting. She added that the flexibility of her schedule is one of the greatest benefits. Without this option, she is not confident that a bachelor's degree would be attainable.
Another winner, Regina White, is a member of the Athabascan Indian tribe in Alaska. She will use the scholarship to pursue an online bachelor's degree in social work at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
