MasterCard scholarships could help prospective college students pay for online degree programs

High school students who wish to pursue higher education at campus-based or online colleges may be able to receive scholarships through a new initiative from MasterCard Worldwide.

The credit card company has entered a partnership with the American Payroll Association (APA) to educate high school students on paychecks and the withholding system through on Money Matters and National Education Day, which will fall on September 9.

In commemoration of the day, APA officials will travel to high schools and youth groups across the country to teach students the elements of a paycheck, what portion of their earnings will go to taxes and how these taxes are calculated.

After the events, attendees will have the opportunity to apply for financial aid, which will be supplied by MasterCard. The company will give a $5,000 scholarship to a grand prize winner and $1,000 to three runners-up.

Each beneficiary will be selected based on a random drawing from an eligible applicant pool.

Prospective students may want to consider applying for similar financial aid programs that could help them finance their education at a campus-based or online school.
