High school seniors in Hawaii may be able to receive financial aid to attend campus-based or online schools through scholarship programs, such as those that are available through the Hawaii Medical Service Association.

The organization has announced the availability of tuition assistance through its Kaimana Awards and Scholarship Program, which will benefit student athletes from across the state.

A total of 21 students will receive $2,000 scholarships. The top three winners will be named HMSA Kaimana Distinguished Scholars and receive additional awards of $1,000 each.

To apply for the awards, qualified students will be required to submit an application form and letters of recommendation.

Candidates must plan to graduate from a Hawaii-based high school this year, have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher and have participated in at least one sport on a school-sponsored team.

The winners will be selected based on academic achievement, community involvement, sportsmanship and their letters of recommendation. Judges will give special consideration to applicants who have played low-profile sports.

Similar scholarship programs may help prospective college students cover the cost of tuition for a campus-based or online degree program.
