Those planning to go back to school may consider Davenport University as it has announced the availability of a prestigious scholarship named for former President Gerald R. Ford, who served as an instructor and assistant football coach at the school.

In fact, the scholarship is being offered to students who pursue a four-year degree in business, technology or health professions - fields in which employment growth is currently the most dynamic.

The first recipient was given the award in 2009, and she has been quoted as hailing the school for offering small class sizes, an innovative curriculum and faculty with real-world experience.

Candidates who want to be considered for the scholarship must have a minimum 3.75 high school grade point average and a minimum ACT score of 31. They must also submit an essay describing how they have upheld and will uphold the values and character of former President Ford.

For more information about the opportunity, students are encouraged to visit the school's website.

Studies have shown that salaries of those with college degrees consistently surpass the earnings of those without higher education.

For example, estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau for 2007 show the average earnings for men with high school education were $42,466, while those with bachelors degrees earned $88,843, which is more than twice as much.
