Gates Corporation awards scholarships to robotics competition winners
Representatives from the Gates Corporation, an industrial and automotive parts manufacturer, have awarded financial aid packages to high school seniors who competed in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) contest.
A total of three students were given non-renewable scholarships worth $2,000 each for the robotic projects they created for the competition. The awardees may use the financial assistance to help them cover the cost of tuition at the campus-based or online school of their choice.
Each of their submissions used a Gates belt drive, as the company is one of the contest's corporate sponsors.
The winners and their families also received a trip to the Gates Technical Center in Michigan, where executive and technical leaders gave them a tour. In addition, the prospective college degree seekers were able to meet with technical and engineering staff members to discuss forthcoming projects, and visit engineering and test labs.
Tribby Warfield, the company's president, said the scholarship program was intended to "bring the best of business and engineering together on behalf of students, and hopefully instill an appreciation of the engineering profession that will last a lifetime."
