Foundation announces call for scholarship applications
In a tight economy, every bit of financial aid helps, and those considering applying for college may take note that the Elks National Foundation is offering scholarships to 500 deserving students.
The Most Valuable Student Scholarship contest was launched on September 1 and runs through November 2, and it is open to all high school seniors who are U.S. citizens. The foundation will award scholarships ranging from $8,000 to $60,000 over four years to 18 top winners, while the runners-up will receive $4,000 over the same time period.
Candidates, who must turn in their applications at their nearest Elks Lodge, will be judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need and do not have to be members of the Elks.
Prospective students are also encouraged to explore other financial aid resources they may be eligible for. Local newspapers, internet and college financial aid offices are all good destinations for those who look for help with paying for college.
Studies have shown that salaries of those with college degrees consistently surpass the earnings of those without higher education.
For example, estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau for 2007 show the average earnings for men with high school education were $42,466, while those with bachelors degrees earned $88,843, which is more than twice as much.
