First Wind awards scholarships to campus-based and online degree seekers

In an effort to encourage college students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM), many campus-based and online schools as well as private companies are offering financial incentives to degree seekers in these fields.

For instance, Boston-based energy company First Wind recently announced the winners of its annual scholarship program for students who are working toward degrees in science-related fields, Mass High Tech reports.

Soon after the company received approval to sell power from a 30-megawatt energy company in Hawaii, First Wind disbursed 10 $3,000 one-time scholarships to students in the Aloha State, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Utah and Vermont.

In addition, company representatives selected one student to receive a $5,000 award, which may be renewed annually for up to four years. This is the second year First Wind has provided financial aid to exceptional students who are planning to enter bachelors degree programs in scientific fields.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals who have completed four-year degree programs earn, on average, more than $1,000 per week.
