Firefighters receive scholarship to online university

Military members, firefighters and police officers may be unaware of the number of scholarships that are available to those who serve the public. A number of schools provide financial aid and even college credits to individuals who work for the government or volunteer.

For example, Columbia Southern University (CSU) recently announced the launch of a scholarship program for the members of the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), FireEngineering.com reports. A financial aid package will be awarded to one student who is working toward an online associate's degree, and the other to an online bachelor's degree seeker.

"CSU offers a variety of degree programs in a format that is compatible with the schedule of a volunteer firefighter," Heather Schafer, NVFC executive director, told the news source. "First responders can get a quality education while balancing the responsibilities of the fire service, full-time jobs and family."

The recipients of the two scholarships can use them toward any of the degree programs offered by the university.

Adult learners may be eligible for a number of scholarship opportunities, as Sallie Mae - a provider of student loans - reports that more than $168 billion in financial aid was available during the 2008-2009 academic year.
