Detroit residents can use scholarship winnings to pursue online degrees

Students who are planning to pursue degrees at a campus-based or online college may want to consider applying for scholarships, such as those that are available through the National Association of Black Automotive Suppliers (NABAS).

The organization has opened the application process for its financial aid program for the 22nd consecutive year in coordination with this year's scholarship sponsors, which include Chrysler, Delphi Corporation, Detroit Chassis, Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Toyota Motors, according to the organization's website.

African American high school seniors who live in the metropolitan Detroit area are eligible to apply for the awards. Applicants should also plan to enter an automotive-related degree program.

More than $100,000 in scholarships will be disbursed through the 2010 program. Since the program's inception, more than $1 million has been given to exceptional students.

Qualified candidates are invited to submit their applications through March 12 on the NABAS website. The winners will be named at the association's annual luncheon in May, where attendees will have the opportunity to hear speeches from past recipients.

Online courses could help automotive professionals work toward a degree while they gain hands-on experience through a part-time job.
