Department of Defense offers scholarships, job opportunities
The U.S. Department of Defense has announced the winners of a new scholarship program that promises financial security and career opportunities to students who enroll in campus-based or online degree programs in science-related fields, the Columbia Missourian reports.
The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship program was disbursed to a total of 200 students, who were selected from a pool of 3,300 applicants. To be eligible for the award, candidates were required to enroll in a campus-based or online degree program in a science-, technology-, engineering- or mathematics-based field. This program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Each winner will receive full tuition reimbursement as well as a monthly stipend. In exchange for these generous benefits, the recipients are required to work for the Department of Defense after they graduate for the same amount of time they received funding.
According to the department's website, this program is intended to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers who work in government-funded laboratories.
The application process for next year's awards will open at the beginning of August.
