Colgate-Palmolive has announced a new scholarship program entitled Make the U (Haz la U) which will provide educational grants to eligible Hispanic students pursuing higher education.
The project is part of the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, and it aims to address the educational achievement gap facing Hispanic Americans. According to some estimates, one in every three students of Hispanic background fails to graduate from high school and only 10 percent obtain a college degree.
"This program invites students to celebrate their Latino culture, reinforces the importance of educational advancement and empowers applicants to become the drivers of their own destiny," says Antonio Tijerino, president and CEO of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation.
Interested candidates are asked to submit an essay of 500 words or less that describes their views on how education can impact Hispanic heritage in the years to come. All entries must be received by October 31.
Studies have shown that salaries of those with college degrees consistently surpass the earnings of those without higher education.
For example, estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau for 2007 show the average earnings for men with high school education were $42,466, while those with bachelors degrees earned $88,843, which is more than twice as much.
