During the 2007-2008 school year, approximately 47 percent of all undergraduate degree candidates received tuition assistance from the government, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Many degree seekers also received financial aid from universities, private organizations and federal work-study programs.

Schools such as Grantham University are increasing their scholarship programs in order to financially assist more degree seekers. The institution recently awarded two members of Blacks In Government with full-tuition scholarships. The scholarship covers tuition costs, required textbooks, software and fees.

"I was already on the path to completing my bachelor's degree, but desperately needed funding, so I applied for the scholarship," said Mia Baker, one of this year's recipients.

Baker, who works for the Library of Congress, plans to complete an online bachelor's degree in multidisciplinary studies at the university.

Grantham typically awards one member of this organization with a scholarship each year, but the school decided that two candidates deserved the award this semester.

In a recent Student Satisfaction Survey, nearly nine out of 10 students stated that they would enroll at Grantham again.
