Pursuing a college degree is particularly challenging to those who also face a serious illness, and that is why Solvay Pharmaceuticals has offered an annual scholarship to victims of cystic fibrosis.

This year, the company has helped nearly 250 affected individuals enroll in college programs through its SolvayCARES scholarship fund.

The fund usually provides one-year scholarships in the amount of $2,500 to 40 students, but this year it also awarded $500 to every eligible applicant in addition to the 40 winners.

The application process includes submitting creative entries, such as essays or presentations, and winners are selected based on the quality of their entries, academic excellence, community involvement and ability to positively represent the cystic fibrosis community.

"For the 17th consecutive year, we are proud to support this deserving and dynamic group of young people in pursuing dreams of higher education," says Stephen Hill, president of Solvay Pharmaceuticals.

"Our hope is that continuing to feature these inspiring stories will result in a … true appreciation of these talented students' achievements and creativity," he adds.

For those who would like to earn a college degree and switch to a rewarding career there are many online programs available at institutions around the country.
