Online masters program for teachers is designed for convenience

The number of jobs for teachers is expected to increase faster than the average for all other occupations over the next eight years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports. Many teachers are expected to retire, which will create even more openings for graduates of masters programs.

Teachers who are already employed, but would like to further their career, may consider enrolling in an online university for higher education. Individuals with advanced degrees and certifications, may be more likely to find a job after graduation.

For example, Wilkes University in eastern Pennsylvania recently announced the launch of an online masters degree program for teachers, reports the Valley News Dispatch. The courses will be offered through a distance learning program that will be based at more than 50 off-campus locations, including schools in the Pittsburgh area.

Karen Pollack, an official with Penn State University's World Campus, told the news source that research shows that students "are actively looking for more opportunities to earn degrees and credentials in more flexible ways."

The educational development and strategies masters program is designed for teachers who could not otherwise attend full-time school on a college campus. Many classes are offered during evenings and on Saturday mornings.

The BLS reports that teachers had average earnings that ranged between $52,240 and $54,390 annually, during the 2008-2009 academic year.
