Online degrees offer career advancement
Teachers are among the professional groups taking the greatest advantage of continuing education, and online universities offer a variety of courses to suit individual students' needs.
For example, local educators in Texas enhance their skills by taking online courses at Beaumont-based Lamar University, according to Longview News-Journal.
The source says the school offers 18-month online masters degrees in educational administration, teacher leadership and educational technology leadership.
Brian Bowman, Longview Independent School District's spokesman, who is also a student at Lamar, told the news source that he did this because his goal is to be a superintendent.
"The first step in doing that is to get a masters. A doctorate will come later. In order for me to move up in the system, I needed a masters," he explained.
Those who are planning to switch careers may consider obtaining an online teaching degree.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, primary and secondary school teachers will experience job growth averaging 5 percent over the next seven years. It also says the top 10 percent of such educators already earn between $67,490 and $76,100 a year.
