UTEP adds new online degree option
Officials at the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) have recently announced that the school will offer an online bachelors degree in multidisciplinary studies (BMS) beginning in the Spring semester.
The new program will allow students who have attended more than one university to group together their credits and put them toward an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree, reports KFOXTV.com.
The BMS program may benefit those who have been out of school for some time and who only need to take a few more classes to reach the 120 credits necessary to graduate.
"They can get done as quickly as possible, so they can get [on with] their career," said UTEP Provost Richard Jarvis, quoted by the news source.
"It's a regular accredited degree," he added. "What it offers is flexibility in schedule and the maximum flexibility in curriculum."
UTEP has offered the BMS degree as an on-campus option for the past four years and has graduated over 500 students in that time.
Nearly one in four students take at least some college courses online, up from one in 10 in 2002, Reuters reports. The online education sector grew 13 percent last year and had been growing at about 20 percent in previous years.
