University set to offer two new online degrees

The University of Buffalo Graduate School of Education (GSE) has added two new online degree programs to their upcoming spring semester offerinig.

GSE will now offer advanced graduate certificate courses in the areas of gifted education and library science.

The gifted education program is specifically designed for New York State certified teachers who are interested in developing the skills to teach and nurture high-ability students.

The master of library science is a two year program that will focus on information access and reference services.

"We are extending the reach of the university, delivering on-campus programs fully online through richly designed learning environments," said assistant dean Christine Kroll. "Providing opportunities to students from Kansas to Singapore and back to Buffalo is our mission," she added.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment for teachers is expected to grow by over 12 percent in the next seven years and will create approximately 479,000 new jobs during that time.

The online education sector grew 13 percent last year and had been growing at about 20 percent in previous years. Nearly one in four students take at least some college courses online, up from one in 10 in 2002, Reuters reports.
