University set to offer online masters degree in history

Wayland Baptist University (WBU) has recently announced that, starting next semester, it will begin offering an online masters degree program in history.

The 37-credit-hour program will be one of the more flexible that Wayland has to offer, with the final exam and a course on the methods of history being the only set coursework required to graduate. The remainder of the curriculum will be made up of topical elective courses that change with the times.

Possible course offerings include environmental history, warfare and culture, medieval history as well as gender and ethnic minority history.

"The possibilities for flexibility in the degree are enormous," said Estelle Owens, dean of the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences. "We are qualified, ready and eager to do this."

The program is designed to be completed within six terms over a period of approximately 18 months.

WBU will only be the fourth school to offer a master of arts in history through an online format. Registration for the spring semester begins on February 1.

Online universities that offer online degree programs may be particularly attractive to busy adults who would like to acquire new skills but do not have the time to do it in a traditional setting.
