University offers online degree in human resources, may help students in global economy

Human resources and employment relations are two of the fastest growing fields in the job market, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Most of the available positions in these sectors will require a bachelors degree.

Due to the globalization of our economy, many employers are seeking individuals with communications skills. As a result, many schools are creating online programs to meet the growing demand for degree options in this field.

For example, Penn State University recently announced the launch of its new online bachelors degree programs in labor and employment relations.

The program has been designed to give access to individuals who are looking to graduate from a top university, but cannot meet the time requirements or distance of Penn State's University Park campus. Students who are enrolled in this and similar programs may have access to alumni networking resources, which could lead them to a potential job opportunity.

"There is a large demand for this degree, because of the central role human resources and employment relations plays in the modern workplace," said Paul F. Clark, a professor in Penn State’s department of labor studies and employment relations.

Individuals who hold an online degree in human resources or employment relations could work with American unions or the federal government.

According to the BLS, wages for human resources managers who were working in 2008 ranged between $73,480 and $163,220 per year.
