University looks to add new online degree program

In the fall semester, the University of California Rossier School of Education is planning on introducing a new online masters degree in teaching English to the speakers of other languages program (MAT-ESOL).

The MAT-ESOL degree is designed to help students comprehend the sociocultural context of urban schools while broadening their understanding of human development. The 13-month curriculum will emphasize linguistics theory and high-level language skills.

To become available to students, the program will require final approval from the university's committee on curriculum. If approved, it will be offered both online and on-campus.

Meanwhile, the school has also announced a plan to develop a master of education in higher education counseling program that they hope will be available in the fall of 2010.

The 46-credit degree offering will provide students with a specialization in counseling without the clinical licensure requirements of a traditional program. Students will take both postsecondary administration and school counseling courses during their time at the university.

Online universities may be particularly attractive to adults who would like to acquire new skills but do not have the time to do so in a conventional setting.
