University experiences record enrollment, credits online degree programs

Valley City State University (VCSU) in Valley City, North Dakota has recently announced that final enrollment numbers for the 2010 spring semester have increased by nearly 8 percent over last year's figures, creating the largest student population since 1990. Officials with the university have credited the emergence of several new programs, including an online masters degree in education, with the increase.

"We have been working hard to attract and retain undergraduate students," said VCSU president Steve Shirley. "Our online master of education program this semester has a headcount of 132, nearly a 17 percent increase over last spring semester."

Shirley also highlighted a new elementary education program that meets state standards for professional certification as well as a new concentration in English language learners.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment of kindergarten, elementary, middle and secondary school teachers is expected to grow by 13 percent over the next decade.

Online education can be a flexible option for those who are looking to earn their degree but find it difficult to attend on-campus classes.
