University creates new online masters degree program
Last week, Georgia Tech's College of Computing announced the creation of an online masters degree program in information security (IS).
The program is designed for working information security professionals who want more than an industry certification, but need the flexibility of online courses.
"Organizations that both build new security solutions and those that must utilize such solutions to protect their information technology assets will need qualified IS professionals with advanced knowledge of the field to address new security challenges," said program director Mustaque Ahamad.
Georgia Tech reports that it is the only university of its class to offer an online IS degree that is certified by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.
The program will focus on network security, cryptography and security protocols as well as many non-technical possibilities of information processing and security.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment in the information security field is expected to increase much faster than average, and that job prospects will be best for those with at least a bachelors degree.
Online education is a cost-effective and flexible option for those who would like to earn their degree but find it difficult to attend classes on campus because of distance, family or work commitments.
