The 21 percent growth rate for online enrollments in 2009 far exceeds the 2 percent growth in the overall higher education student population, according to the Sloan Consortium. As a result, numerous campus-based and online institutions are aiming to improve their distance learning programs.

For example, Grantham University officials recently announced the launch of a mobile National Test Center (NTC). The NTC was designed to provide computer-based testing for service members and eligible military spouses, which can enable them to receive credit through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP).

Jeff Cropsey, Grantham University vice president for Strategic Initiatives, said that this is a great opportunity for small or remote military units to have a NTC temporarily set-up to provide service members and eligible spouses with access to CLEP tests. He added that this new program continues the school's mission of meeting the educational needs of service members, and it fulfills the demand for testing - which was not available previously - at many active duty, Guard and Reserve locations.
