The University of Cincinnati (UC) has recently announced that it has added six new online masters degree specialties to its nursing degree program.

UC will now offer specialties that lead to careers as an adult nurse practitioner, a clinical nurse specialist, a family nurse practitioner and a nursing service administrator.

In addition, students who are looking to enter into the field of psychiatry can select from programs that will allow them to train as a mental health nurse practitioner or a mental health clinical nurse.

"In this leading-edge distance learning graduate program, students experience a unique and powerful way to earn their degree that leverages the strengths of traditional programs with new online technologies like virtual classrooms and time-tested teaching philosophies, including local professional preceptors to work one-on-one with advanced practice students," said chief academic officer Gloria Pickar.

Labor Department analysts predict that by 2012, a total of 1 million nurses will be needed to care for the aging population, and some 587,000 new nursing jobs will be created nationwide.

Online training in the healthcare field is growing by nearly 20 percent, making it the fastest growing industry in the online education sector.
