According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), overall employment of electricians is expected to increase by 12 percent over the next eight years. These professionals can often benefit from earning advanced degrees or certifications, as employers often seek applicants with these levels of education.

In order to help more adults become trained for positions in this field, Eastern Shore Community College (ESCC) announced that its courses have met the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation vocational training requirements for journeyman electricians or HVAC mechanics, Dalmarva Now reports.

ESCC also collaborated with Penn Foster Career School to offer an online certificate course, which counts toward their required training hours. The course was designed to help prepare students for the National Electrical Codes examination. ESCC and Penn Foster will also offer an online course for those who wish to take the examination for journeyman plumbers.

The BLS reports that electricians held about 694,900 jobs in 2008. They earned an average of $22.32 per hour.
