Survey shows workers more open to flexible education options

A new survey has found America's post-recession success will hinge on a better-trained and skilled workforce.

The study, conducted for The Springboard Project, an independent commission convened by Business Roundtable, moreover found that more workers would be willing to pursue continuing education if they could access programs that offer flexible hours or enrollment periods.

Online universities are among the best options that cater to the needs of busy processionals by offering weekend and evening courses.

According to the survey, a total of 65 percent of businesses will require applicants to hold an associates or higher degree.

"We know that when educators and employers work together, students receive not only basic skills that will allow them to continue their education, but also the specific capabilities that employers are looking for when making hiring decisions," says Gail Mellow, president of LaGuardia Community College in New York and a member of The Springboard Project.

Better salary prospects are another reason to enroll in an online degree program as recent estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the average earnings of those with college education are about twice as high as those of individuals who have only a high school degree.
