Resources offered by online schools aid many looking to continue education

Wednesday, Jun 16 2010 4:50PM

In 2009, unemployment rates were highest for those with the least education, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). For many, a degree from an online college or university may be the key to a more secure future.

On average, college degree holders have more job opportunities and higher income levels, the BLS reported.

A study by the Sloan Consortium reports that during bad economic times, people often go back to school because of decreased availability of good jobs or because those who are employed wish to improve their chances for advancement.

Online schools are now offering resources to help adults continue their education. Web-based forums with GRE tips, scholarship opportunities, and helpful school finders are making distance education more accessible than ever before.

Mega Degree is one such resource that offers open discussion boards where members can ask experts questions and gain information about online schools.

Similar forums offer users the guidance needed to find the right school and obtain an online bachelors, masters or doctorate degree.

Online education is growing increasingly popular. The Sloan Consortium reports that more than 20 percent of all U.S. higher education students are taking at least one online course.
