Penn State to add online masters degree in homeland security

Officials at Penn State University have announced that the school is launching an online intercollege master of professional studies in homeland security program this fall. The new degree offering will incorporate four specializations into the university's current master of homeland security in public health program.

The program was developed for working emergency management officials, public health personnel, law enforcement and military service members who are looking to advance in their current careers.

Enrolled students can choose from five specializations, including public health preparedness, geospatial intelligence, agricultural biosecurity and homeland security.

"The discipline of homeland security has become a consortium of many different specialties," said Robert Cherry, program chair for the masters degree program.

"Penn State's program was created to complement these diverse specialties with a homeland security education portfolio that will suit the needs of many individuals working in this field," he added.

Online universities may be particularly attractive to adults who would like to acquire new skills but do not have the time to do so in a conventional setting.
