Online university set to enroll in sprint football league
Post University, an online education provider based out of Connecticut, has recently announced that it is joining the Collegiate Sprint Football League.
The school will join three Ivy League institutions and two military service academies in a league where the only mandate is that all players must weigh less than 172 pounds.
University president Ken Zirke plans to create a greater sense of community for the school by making spots on the team available to both on-campus and online students.
"A lot of online colleges don't have a campus to call home," said Zirkle. "Online students want to take pride in their university. I expect that adding [a sprint football team] will do nothing but enhance that," he added.
The concept of a competitive football team has garnered quite a bit of interest among Post University students. The school's athletic director has said that he has received inquiries about tickets months before the season is even set to begin.
Today, over 3.5 million students are taking online courses and earning online college degrees. At the secondary school level, over 700,000 high school students are taking one or more courses online and nearly 40 states have established state-led virtual schools.
