Online university now offers masters in sport management

Americans who wish to work in athletics may want to consider a career in sport management. Last year, professionals in this field held about 16,300 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Due to the high demand for industry experts, many online universities are expanding their athletic degree offerings. For example, Liberty University Online recently announced that it will offer a master of science in sport management with a specialization in sport administration.

The degree program will focus on teaching students the industry-specific management skills that are necessary to organize, administer and facilitate sport programs at a variety of levels.

Coursework in this and similar programs may include an interdisciplinary approach to management, which provides an intensive study of social and ethical issues, legal issues, marketing organization and administration as well as research strategies.

Liberty Online, which is a Christian university, also integrates faith and ministry into the curriculum.

Students who graduate with a masters in sport management may be qualified for positions in public relations, marketing, broadcast journalism, sport agencies, promotion and development administration and sports information management, as well as interscholastic athletic administration and outdoor recreation.

The BLS reports that employment of professionals in this industry is projected to grow 37 percent over the next eight years, which is much faster that the average for all other occupations. Job prospects should be good for athletic trainers with advanced degrees or certification.
