Online university announces keynote speaker for upcoming graduation ceremony

Walden University, an accredited online education provider, has recently announced that Margaret Spellings, former U.S. Secretary of Education, will be the keynote speaker at the winter commencement on January 23 in Dallas.

Under Spellings leadership, the DOE helped implement and enforce the No Child Left Behind Act, which demands that schools bring all students up to grade level or better in math and reading by 2014.

Previous to her work with the DOE, Spellings worked as a senior adviser on education policy and reform for former Texas Governor George W. Bush.

"Walden is honored to have Secretary Spellings address the impact that education can have on every child and on our nation's prosperity," said university president Jonathan Kaplan.

"We look forward to having her share her insight, knowledge and experience with our graduates and guests," he added.

Online students who cannot attend the graduation can take part in the ceremony and the address via webcast. Today, over 3.5 million students are taking online courses and earning online college degrees.
