Online university added to 'military friendly' list of schools

Florida Institute of Technology, a provider of online education programs, was recently named a "military friendly" school by GI Jobs and the Military Advanced Educational Journal.

Florida Tech offers a variety of benefits to its students who are service members including special tuition rates and book discounts as well as military spouse and qualified dependent concessions.

The school has also announced that its online college of business, which began with only 70 participants in May 2008, now has over 650 enrolled students.

"This growth is remarkable," said dean Bob Niebuhr. "We believe it's due largely to our faculty members and high-quality online programs which are appealing to active professionals pursuing higher education," he added.

Florida Tech will be adding several online associates degree programs next semester including accounting, criminal justice, healthcare management as well as marketing and computer information systems.

Nearly one in four students take at least some college courses online, up from one in 10 in 2002, Reuters reports. The online education sector grew 13 percent last year and had been growing at about 20 percent in previous years.
