Military Advanced Education magazine names top military friendly schools

According to a recent Babson-Sloan report, more than one in four students are enrolled in at least one course online, and most higher education institutions believe that increasing online classes and degrees is critical for their long-term success. Many of these institutions are aiming to accommodate nontraditional students, such as military service members.

For example, Western Governors University (WGU) was recently named one of the Top Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities by Military Advanced Education (MAE) magazine. The online university was chosen because of its quality academic programs and effective distance learning practices. Also, WGU has been granted permission to accept GI Bill benefits from active-duty, reserve, National Guard personnel and veterans.

The school has been included on the publication's list for four years due to its flexible scheduling and anytime access to coursework, which may benefit military personnel and their dependents.

In addition, WGU's competency-based learning structure allows students to advance by showing their knowledge of subject matter instead of by accumulating credit hours, as most institutions do.
